Tips for Women’s Wellness

Advice from our Round Rock obgyns about women’s wellness

Advice from our Round Rock obgyns about women’s wellnessOur Round Rock obgyns focus on women’s wellness every day. Our physicians discuss proper nutrition, fitness, stress management and other aspects of overall health during wellness exams. A woman’s diet, weight and mental health can affect many aspects of her reproductive health and overall wellness. Making good daily choices is an essential part of optimizing a woman’s wellbeing.

Good nutrition is one of the building blocks of women’s wellness

Proper nutrition contributes to women’s wellness by providing essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals. A healthy diet should include several food groups.

  • Whole grains provide fiber.
  • Fruits and vegetables contain vitamins and fiber.
  • Lean protein builds and repairs muscles and tissues.
  • Dairy, dark greens, enriched cereal and juice, some soy products and certain seafood provide calcium.
  • Healthy fats, especially from plant oil, promote brain development and blood clotting.

During their reproductive years, women should also take a daily supplement that provides 400 mcg of folic acid.

Staying fit benefits a woman’s reproductive and overall health

“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.”
–Jim Rohn

Women’s wellness is also about reaching and maintaining an optimal weight. Women who are obese, meaning they have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, have a higher risk of several health issues, including heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and fertility problems.

Our Round Rock obgyns and the Office on Women’s Health recommend that women perform moderate exercise for 150 minutes, or two and a half hours, per week. Moderate exercise includes activities like walking, biking and swimming. Strength training at least two days per week also benefits women’s wellness.

Stress management prevents stress-related illnesses and problems

Chronic stress contributes to several health conditions, including:

  • Pain
  • Skin problems like hives, rashes and acne
  • Digestive issues
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Insomnia
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Fertility problems
  • Issues with menstruation
  • Sexual dysfunction

Our Round Rock obgyns address stress, depression and other mental health issues at women’s wellness visits. Stress management can include meditation, journaling, talking to a professional therapist or a loved one, eating a balanced diet, exercising and addressing sleep problems.

During the annual well-woman examination, our Round Rock obgyns focus on women’s wellness and preventive healthcare. Women should contact us to schedule their wellness exam.
