Imaging Services
Oakwood Women’s Centre is also proud to offer imaging services in the comfort of the office. These services are not only convenient for the patient but also allow the physician to have immediate access to information for medical decision-making. Imaging services include:
- Ultrasound - Pelvic and obstetric ultrasounds are provided in the office by our trained sonographers.
- Pelvic ultrasound can be helpful in the diagnosis of pelvic pain, ovarian cysts, menstrual abnormalities and other gynecological problems.
- Obstetric ultrasound is used in the management of pregnancy. Couples may find out the sex of their baby at their anatomy ultrasound which is routinely done between 18-22 weeks.
- We are certified to offer the first trimester screen. This is an optional test that estimates your baby’s risk for Down’s syndrome and two other genetic conditions. If you choose to have this test, a blood test and an ultrasound are done at 11-13 weeks.
- Elective 3D/4D ultrasounds are available to our patients for a nominal fee.
- Mammography - In January 2011, Oakwood Women’s Centre installed new state-of-the-art digital mammography equipment. Patients now may have their yearly screening mammograms done at the same time as their annual visit. Austin Radiological Association (ARA) reads our digital mammography images and provides access to old films performed previously at other ARA locations.
- Bone Density - We offer dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) to measure bone density in women at risk for osteoporosis. This is the most accurate test available to measure bone density. Women who have low bone density may be treated in order to prevent a fracture in the future.
- Body Fat Composition - In addition to testing for bone loss, the DEXA scan may also test for body fat composition. This can be an effective tool when one is on a weight loss or conditioning program. Body fat composition testing is not covered by insurance and is an elective procedure offered here for a nominal fee.
In-Office Procedures
Our practice is now offering office-based procedures. Procedures done in our office have many advantages over surgery done in the hospital setting. Benefits include:
- Lower cost
- Time efficiency
- Reduced anesthesia
- Faster recovery time
- Comfortable setting
Procedures that may be done in the office include sterilization, such as Essure, and treatment for heavy periods such as endometrial ablation. Please note, not everyone is a candidate for in-office surgery; our physicians will consider each case individually.
