Paying attention to pregnancy and weight has several benefits

When conceiving, being at a healthy or normal weight has several benefits. What is the optimal weight for pregnancy? Our team of OBGYNs will calculate your body mass index (BMI), which is a formula based on your weight and height. Your BMI will fall into one of four categories: underweight, normal, overweight or obese.

According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, 12 percent of all infertility cases are a result of women being underweight or overweight. Women in both of these categories often do not produce adequate amounts of estrogen, a hormone that helps regulate the menstrual cycle. As a result, these women may not ovulate or have irregular periods.

In addition, women who have a high BMI or are considered obese are at a higher risk for miscarriage, C-section and developing complications during pregnancy, including gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure).

If you are underweight or overweight, our OBGYNs can help you determine the reasons. Developing a strategy that includes changes in diet and exercise may help you achieve a BMI that is the normal range or better suited for pregnancy.

Expectant mothers should avoid excessive weight gain during pregnancy

At Oakwood Women’s Centre, we do not subscribe to a one-size-fits-all philosophy when it comes to weight gain during pregnancy. At each prenatal visit, our knowledgeable OBGYNs will evaluate your weight before making any recommendations. A few of the factors our team will take into consideration include your pre-pregnancy weight and BMI and your overall health and your baby’s health.

Pregnancy is not the time to diet or worry about your weight.  However, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that all women, regardless of pre-pregnancy weight, should avoid excessive weight gain during pregnancy. General guidelines during pregnancy include adopting a healthy diet and staying physically active. If despite your best efforts you are gaining too much weight or not enough, our OBGYNs will be there to safely guide you.

Why the concern pregnancy and weight gain? Landing on either end of the weight spectrum during pregnancy may increase the risk of complications. If you gain too much weight, you may have a longer labor or require a C-section. If you don’t gain enough weight, your baby could be born early or have a low birth weight.
